In the early 60’s a vast housing estate was being built in Sandfields and a large
number of young families were moving in to live in the area. Port Talbot Methodist
Circuit felt it was time to plant a church among new community.
In 1963, arrangements were made for the circuit stewards to go around the houses
to explain that two classrooms at Traethmelyn Primary School would hold a service
and Sunday school every Sunday morning at 10.30 am. The response was amazing. Despite
the limitation of space in the school rooms, Sunday worship continued there for three
years until the present building in Western Avenue was opened on October 14th 1966.
The church gradually grew over the years and the new building has become a prominent
part of the community. The local council, at one stage, asked the church if they
would allow their residential artist to paint the church as part of their plan to
brighten up the estate. The church was due to be painted, so the answer was yes.
The result was a multi coloured church of Blue, Orange, Yellow and Red which was
very striking but not to everyone’s likening. It remained like this for many years
until when it was repainted in a sedate cream colour. Even now, the church is referred
to by many people as the rainbow church in Sandfields.
We are a friendly and Caring Christian community, seeking to worship and serve the
Lord in and around Sandfields. A warm welcome awaits you in our church if you wish
to worship or join in any of the regular groups of the church.
We have an active Sunday School which forms part of the morning worship. The church
hall and back room are available for community use.
